Photographer Volker Otto 480-816-9184 Al Stimac, President, welcomed members and guests to the meeting on Feb. 1, 2006. Jack Davis led the Pledge of Allegiance. Our Speaker this month was to have been Alan Bannister. However, a family emergency took precedence. With great ability, Walt Blackmore and Jim Sublett were able to make a last minute fill-in with a presentation and demon-stration of wood carving for am-ateurs. Walt began learning this tal-ent in Montreal during his last as-signment for AlliedSignal. He pre-sented information on types of carving and carvers, carver skills and the variety of tools used in this craft. In addition, various carvings and tools were available at the meeting to demonstrate his points. Thanks much Walt. Walt, Jim and their compatriots in this skill will be showing their works at the 17th Desert Woodcarving Show and Sale, Saturday Mar. 11 and Sunday Mar. 12 at Mesa Centennial Hall, 201 N. Center St., Mesa. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, March 1st. Our speaker will be Gary Hertzler. A long time Allied-Signal engineer (1971-2000), Gary will talk about his experiences building, modifying and flying his Burt Rutan designed Vari-Eze. Gary’s work has earned him 3 World Records for effic-iency and non-re-fueled flight. We will also have a brief presentation by CDI, of interest to those of you who may be looking for some part-time employment. A special Thank You and Con-gratulations to Ed Sullivan who has agreed to become assistant treasurer for the remainder of this Spring and then take over as club Treasurer in the Fall. And our most heartfelt thanks to Ed Gammill who has faithfully served our Club for many years Reminder - we no longer charge dues for the spouse of couples who are both retirees from AiResearch/Garrett/ AlliedSignal/ Honeywell. We are looking for volunteers to bring some of our non-driving West Side members to and from the meetings. If you are willing to help, please contact Al. 50/50 winners were Ron Clarke and Volker Otto. This month’s charity donations were given to Down’s Syndrome Network of Az. and Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. A thank you notes was received from Boys & Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale. Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 7375 East 2nd Street (2nd Street and Civic Center Drive.) The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, September - May, except for December – our Holiday Lunch-eon. We have a social hour begin-ning at 1:00 pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm. Please note that the Scottsdale Senior Center will be moving to a new location on the Scottsdale Senior Campus at McDowell and Granite Reef Roads. This move will not take place prior to the May meeting and may be even later. We will let you know when this transition to the new location is scheduled to take place. |
